Republicans grapple with affordability messaging amid rising costs

MIAMI (Gray DC) - House Republicans gathered this week at President Donald Trump’s $379 million Miami golf resort to map out their message on affordability.

Blaming Democrats on the economy

Rep. Steve Scalise said the party’s approach is to draw a contrast with Democrats on economic issues.

“We had a lot of mess to mop up from four years of Joe Biden. Let’s not forget the record high inflation, record high interest rates, cost through the roof. Democrats never wanted to talk about affordability when they were jacking up costs on all families,” Scalise said.

Highlighting the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

Republicans also plan to promote economic provisions in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and a $6,000 deduction for seniors.

“When people file their tax returns this year, four in ten American families are getting real money back. Over $1,000 back for most working families,” Scalise said.

Gas prices climbing after Iran strikes

The affordability push comes as gas prices have risen sharply since the U.S. dropped its first set of bombs on Iran earlier this month. According to AAA, prices are up an average of 50 cents from a week ago. Experts say prices could jump a full dollar by next week.

Republicans are also working to portray the GOP as the party of reason. Democrats are engaging a similar strategy ahead of the midterms.
