GOP focuses on contrast strategy, affordability ahead of midterms

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -House Republicans concluded a three-day retreat at President Donald Trump’s Miami golf club, with unified midterm messaging as their top priority.

Uphill battle for the majority

Republicans enter the midterm cycle facing historical headwinds. The sitting president’s party has lost seats in 20 of the last 22 midterm elections. After President Barack Obama’s 2008 win, Democrats lost 63 House seats. After Trump’s 2016 win, Republicans lost 29 seats, with Democrats picking up an additional 14 open seats.

Contrast and affordability as core themes

Republicans are centering their strategy on drawing distinctions with Democrats on immigration and taxes.

“We really have to show the true contrast between Democrats and Republicans,” said Rep. Mark Alford. “Do you want to support illegal aliens, or do you want to deport criminal illegal aliens?”

Alford also pointed to economic messaging as a key pillar. “Do you want higher taxes or do you want lower taxes? Not just for millionaires and billionaires. The benefits [of the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’] are truly kicking in,” he said.

Save America Act creates friction

One element generating internal tension is the Save America Act, which would require photo ID and proof of citizenship to vote. The legislation also includes provisions barring men from women’s sports and other anti-transgender measures.

Trump said he will not sign any legislation until the bill passes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters the bill could reach the floor as soon as next week, though without Democratic support it is unlikely to pass.

Lawmakers departed Miami and returned to Washington, D.C., with Election Day approximately eight months away.
