Manhunt for Brown University gunman continues after suspect released

NEW YORK (Gray Media) - The manhunt continues for the person who killed two students and injured nine at Brown University in Providence, RI over the weekend. After authorities arrested one person of interest Sunday, they released the suspect late Sunday night.

The reversal created fresh anxiety on campus and around the region as the investigation continues. Providence officials maintain there is no credible, active threat to the community, but with no one in custody the fears remain.

Law enforcement is asking for help from the public to identify the person who opened fire on 60 people in a lecture hall Saturday afternoon. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the roller coaster in this investigation over the last 48 hours.

“I know there’s been some frustration from members of the community and others about the language that we’ve been using about the person of interest and such, and that speaks to directly the fact that this investigation was and continues ongoing, and we will continue to endeavor to not confirm any information that is not yet confirmable,” said Smiley.

These students were studying for finals and in the wake of this tragedy the university announced it was cancelling almost all in-person exams for the rest of the year. Brown remains open but is encouraging most employees to work remote.
