Congress mourns death of Rep. David Scott
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Lawmakers on Capitol Hill paused to remember Georgia Congressman David Scott (D-GA), after his death was announced on Wednesday.
On the House floor, members took part in a moment of silence to remember Scott, after his office said he died unexpectedly at age 80.
“Words cannot fully express our sorrow. We will honor David’s memory by continuing the work that he loved,” said Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA) on the floor.
Scott started his political career in the Georgia General Assembly in 1974 and served there until he was elected to Congress in 2002. He worked for 12 terms and made history as the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee.
Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) said he knew the late congressman for decades and often flew with him on the same flights to Washington.
“He always served honorably and did what he felt was in the best interest of the state of Georgia,” Rep. Austin Scott said. “He was very good friend. We were on the same side on a lot of issues and when we weren’t on the same side, obviously respectful disagreements. But David Scott was just… he was a wonderful human being.”
Several congressional offices and Georgia state lawmakers also issued statements in remembrance of Rep. David Scott online.
